A husband convicted of murdering his pregnant
wife after suspecting her of having an affair is appealing against his
death sentence.
Ras Al Khaimah Criminal Court had sentenced the 33-year-old man – who
lives in the UAE without official documents – to death after he was
found guilty of killing his Iranian wife.
Court records show the man was arrested after he was suspected of
stabbing his 25-year-old wife to death at their home in the Mamourah
area of RAK. Prosecutors charged the husband with premeditated murder.
The man, a Bedouin, admitted to committing the crime, stressing he
could not control his anger following a fierce argument with his wife.
He told the court he went to the kitchen and took a knife then stabbed
his wife, who was pregnant, to death. The man claims she became pregnant
after having an affair and her lover used to send her messages.
“I saw the messages on her mobile phone and a description of the
relationship,” the husband told the court. The judge convicted the man
based on his testimony and the evidence presented by prosecutors and was
given the death sentence.
However, the man appealed the verdict, asking for a lighter sentence
because he didn’t intend to kill his wife. He told RAK Appeal Court on
Thursday that he killed the woman to defend his honour and his act was
not a premeditated murder as described by the prosecutors. The man also
noted that the victim’s relatives should be consulted again to see if
they will accept blood money.
He said the family had earlier agreed to leniency if he paid Dhs115,000.
However, official documents show the relatives denied any amicable
settlement, and insisted on the death penalty when they were consulted
by officials during hearings at the lower court. The court was adjourned
until April 15 so officials can speak to the victim’s family to see if
they will agree to pardon the killer.
